Privacy policy

Last updated 16 September 2026. This policy covers deadringer.dev and the Dead Ringer app. The controller is No404 (Pty) Ltd, South Africa.

1. What we hold

  • Email address. Given when you start a trial, buy a licence, or log in. Used to issue keys, send sign-in codes, send invoices and renewal notices, and answer support. Not used for marketing unless you ask for it.
  • Licence records. Key id, seat count, dates, and the Paddle transaction and subscription ids that go with them.
  • Activation records. When you activate the app on a machine, it sends a SHA-256 hash of a machine fingerprint, an optional machine name, and the app version. We store the hash, never the raw fingerprint. This is how the two-machine limit is counted. Every six hours or so the app sends the key id, the same hash and its version again so we can tell it about a new build and confirm the licence; we record when that last happened.
  • Activity log. Sign-in codes requested and used, activations, and any support action we take on your account, each with IP address, browser identifier and time. We keep this under our legitimate interest in security, fraud prevention and resolving disputes, and it is not used for anything else. Kept for 12 months.
  • Integration requests. If you ask for an integration we do not have, we keep the email you gave, what you asked for and any note you wrote, so we can reply and tell you if it ships. It is not a marketing list and we do not add you to one. Ask us and we delete it.
  • Server logs. Standard web server logs with IP address and requested URL, kept for 30 days for security and debugging.

2. What we do not hold

  • Payment card details. Paddle, the merchant of record, handles payment and holds what it needs for invoicing and tax. See Paddle's privacy policy.
  • Anything from inside the app. Dead Ringer runs on your machine. Your projects, messages, templates and emails stay there. The app's only calls to us are the activation and the update check described above, and neither carries anything from inside it.
  • Analytics. There are no analytics or tracking scripts on this site and no telemetry in the app.

3. Who we share with

Paddle, for payment, invoicing and tax. Postmark, to deliver email. Our hosting provider, on whose servers the data sits. Nobody else, unless the law requires it.

4. How long we keep it

Licence and activation records for as long as the licence could still be used, plus the period tax law requires us to keep transaction records. Trial emails for one year after the trial ends. The activity log for 12 months. Server logs for 30 days.

5. Your rights

You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Deleting a licence record means the key stops being activatable on new machines; machines already activated keep working. Email [email protected] from the address on the account. We respond within two business days.

If you are in South Africa, the Protection of Personal Information Act applies. If you are in the EU or UK, the GDPR applies and you may complain to your local supervisory authority.

6. Cookies

Three cookies, all needed to make the site work: a session cookie, a token that protects forms, and, if you sign in, a remember-me cookie you asked for. None of them track you and none need consent. During checkout, Paddle's payment page sets its own cookies under Paddle's privacy policy. No analytics or advertising cookies.
